Riding on the machines that changed the world, the manufacturing industry has evolved through transformative revolutions—from traditional substitution-based manufacturing, to the advent of lean manufacturing for reducing waste and creating value in production processes, followed by green manufacturing, which involves the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) concept, and today, sustainable manufacturing, which addresses sustainability issues in three interrelated compartments—product, process, and system—using a broader, innovation-based 6R methodology to not only meet the 3Rs but also to remanufacture, redesign, and recover products over multiple life cycles.
Sustainable manufacturing, as an application of circularity principles under the emerging concept of the circular economy, demands a holistic perspective that spans not just the products and their fabrication processes, but also the entire manufacturing system and supply chains. It emphasizes the full product life cycle and considers economic, environmental, and societal implications—the so-called triple bottom line—across pre-manufacturing, manufacturing, use through post-use stages in the life-cycle. As a complex systems challenge, sustainable manufacturing increasingly relies on analytics-driven approaches that enable learning and development through both reductionist thinking and holistic system interpretation. Achieving this requires intelligent technologies, innovative analytics, and adaptive mental models, as manufacturing systems are comprised of interrelated processes, units, norms, values, behaviors, and stakeholders—all influencing and being influenced by one another.
The Sustainable Manufacturing Analytics Lab (SMAL) is a dedicated research space committed to advancing sustainable manufacturing systems for a circular economy. By leveraging AI-driven technologies and innovative analytics, SMAL tackles core challenges across product, process, and supply chain domains, transforming them into impactful solutions.
